Joe Duran- Head Coach

Coach Duran just finished his 15th season as the head coach of the Barbers. In 2023 the Barbers won the programs first AAA American Legion State Championship. This summer, the Barbers won their second AAA State title in three years, captured the programs first AAA Regional Northwest regional championship, and finished 3rd at the AAA World Series in Shelby, North Carolina. The trip to the World Series marked the first time since 1969 that a team from Portland qualified for the tourney. In fifteen seasons under coach Duran, the Barbers have accumulated a record of 487 wins, 177 losses and 3 ties for a .735 winning percentage. Coach Duran has guided the Barbers to thirteen area 2 league championships, and his teams have qualified for the AAA American Legion State Tournament every year since their inaugural season (2010). Coach Duran graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1994. There he played football, baseball, and basketball earning nine varsity letters. In 1993, Joe was selected as a 1st team all-city running back and defensive back and was chosen to play in the Oregon Shrine football game. Later that spring, Joe was selected as a 1st team all-city shortstop and runner up P.I.L. player of the year. Coach Duran received a scholarship offer to play football at the University of Utah but ended up playing baseball at Portland State University. There, coach Duran earned his bachelor’s degree in 1999. In 2000, coach Duran earned his Masters Degree from Concordia University. In 2021, coach Duran was inducted to the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame. Coach Duran was the head baseball coach at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, California from 2002 to 2006. Coach Duran currently resides in SW Portland with his wife Rachael and sons Mason, and Nolan.

Ben Bertrand- Assistant Coach

Coach Bertrand just finished his seventh season with the Barbers. Coach Bertrand was a standout catcher at the Dalles High School earning All-State honors and was selected to play in the Metro-State All Star baseball series in 1993. Coach Bertrand continued his playing career at Chemeketa Community College earning all NWACC honors in 1994. During his undergraduate years at Oregon State University, coach Bertrand was a baseball standout. Coach Bertrand was a two-year starter and was named to the All-Pac 10 team in 1996 and 1997. During his senior year, coach Bertrand hit .365 and recorded the third highest single season slugging percentage (.368) in Oregon State’s history. Coach Bertrand also hit 10 home runs and had 49 RBI’s that season which earned him 2nd Team Academic All-American honors. Coach Bertrand graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy in 1997. Coach Bertrand went on to play for two seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization. Coach Bertrand works closely with our catchers. Coach Bertrand’s knowledge of the game is second to none.

Dave Schoppe- Assistant Coach

Coach Schoppe is starting his 4th season with the Barbers. Coach Schoppe started his 28-year coaching career in 1992 at his alma matter, Tigard High School where he stayed for ten seasons, four of those years as the head coach. Coach Schoppe helped guide Lake Oswego to the state championship in 2004. Prior to joining the Barbers staff, coach Schoppe was a varsity assistant at Jesuit high school and helped them capture the 2019 state championship. Coach Schoppe was a standout baseball player at Tigard High school where he received All- League honors in 1985, 1986, and All-State honors in 1987. Coach Schoppe earned a full scholarship to Oregon State and received All Pac-10 North honors in 1989, 1990, and 1991. Coach Schoppe spent two summers (’90-’91) playing for the Orleans Cardinals in the Cape Cod league and another 13-season playing semi-pro baseball in the N.W. Leagues. Dave works closely with our hitters and spends a ton of time in the bull pen with our pitchers. Coach Schoppes, energy is boundless, his positive attitude is infectious, and his knowledge of all aspects of the game of baseball is second to none. Coach Schoppe teaches health at Tualatin High school and resides in Tigard with his wife Christie, sons Stanley, Jackson, and his daughter Maddie.
